Summer Is Not Over Yet

Every time I turn on the tv these days, which is not often (we have Netflix), the back to school ads slap me in the face. Parenting websites and magazines are full of tips and tricks to guide you through the perilous preparation days leading up to the start of school.

I would like to take a moment to remind all of you that:

SUMMER IS NOT OVER YET!

You still have a couple of precious weeks to enjoy the weather and your somewhat more relaxed schedules. Don’t waste your time poring over school supply lists – your kids won’t use any of that stuff during their first week back. Plus, they’ll lose everything by the end of the second week. You might as well start fresh during week 3 of school.

Forget about clothes shopping, you have no idea what all of the other kids will be wearing yet. It takes a few weeks for kids fashion trends to emerge. Besides, chances are your kids will grow out of everything you buy by mid-October.

Use your remaining summer days wisely, ignore the looming start of September and make the most of the last of summer.

Of course, my kids haven’t started school yet so what do I know.

About dirtyrottenparenting

I'm a parent of two lovely (most of the time) children. I work full time out of the home and I don't cook well, bake, sew, or do crafty things. I keep my high heels and jewelry at my office because there's no point in having them at home. I love Mondays because I can return to the world of adults, go to the bathroom alone and have nearly uninterrupted conversations with others.

I’m going to forward this post to the local supermarket that put out its Halloween candy display three weeks ago.

  2. My kids already started on Tuesday, but I love your stress free approach. I let go this year and did not freak out about having the absolute correct items on day 1, because as you said, they won’t use them and will lose them by the time they need them anyway. I also have not watched commercials in years, due to netflix and DVR. Thanks for making me laugh today!

  3. I went supply shopping with three kids the night before school started. Thank God, the baptist church had a back-to-school event the weekend before and they had some of that stuff already. Clothes are going to have to wait.

Nevermind – Costco already has Christmas stuff out, and has since the beginning of August! Pfft!
