“What do ya do with a drunken sailor, earligh in the marnin?” I have no idea who wrote this song but you can listen to a fun version of the entire song (with random extra verses) at the website for International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
In case you don’t know, September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Apparently this year is the 10th anniversary of ITLAPD. It is one of my favorite annual holidays. Sadly, it’s not a paid holiday so I don’t take the whole day off to talk like a pirate. I do celebrate by turning my Facebook page language to ‘Pirate’ and send at least one or 2 piratey emails out to friends over the course of the day.
Here are 5 basic terms you should master in order to enjoy ITLAPD to its fullest (taken directly from their website):
Ahoy! – Hello
Avast! – Stop and pay attention to this.
Aye! – Yes, I agree.
Aye aye! – I’ll get right on it.
Arrr! – Can mean a variety of things including, but not limited to: yes, I agree, I’m happy, I’m enjoying this beer, that was clever, and anything else you’d like it to mean.
I realize this post has had nothing at all to do with parenting, so for all of us with children, there is a special site for kids at http://www.talklikeapirate.com/juniorpirates.html
Pirate fun for the whole family!
