The 2013 Parenting Plan

I didn’t plan to take such a long holiday break from blogging but with the kids home, I was forced to spend more time parenting and less time online. That and we all got sick and had family over for a few days.

Now that I’ve lost the disciplinary power of Santa, I figure it’s time to make a plan for the next year of parenting. No, I am not making any resolutions. I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. I believe they are actually a marketing ploy by fitness centres and diet product producers to make you feel bad about your previous year’s failures and sell you a lot of crap you’re not going to use a month after buying it.

My 2013 parenting plan… do less of it. I keep hearing about how my parent’s and grandparent’s generations pretty much just shoved their kids out the door to play until the next mealtime or bedtime and that was  parenting in the good ol’ days.

It’s time to bring back the good ol’ days!

Raining? Put on your boots and go play outside.
Cold and snowy? Put on your hat and mittens and go play outside.
Bored? Out the door with you.
Sick? Here’s some kleenex, put it in your pocket and go out and play.
Hail? Put on a hard hat and grab a bat. No need for a practice pitcher today!
Tornado warning? Tie yourself to the deck and pretend you’re a hot air balloon.
Lightning? Get out there and re-enact the creation of Frankenstein’s monster.
Earthquake? You’re probably safer outside.

My son starts kindergarten in September. Now I just have to figure out a way to make the hill there go up both ways.

About dirtyrottenparenting

I'm a parent of two lovely (most of the time) children. I work full time out of the home and I don't cook well, bake, sew, or do crafty things. I keep my high heels and jewelry at my office because there's no point in having them at home.

Love it! We were always outside when we were kids. No TV, computers, xbox, playstations for us! Outside to invent, explore, pretend, play. I think it also helped Mum’s sanity somewhat too! 🙂

I know my mom did it just so we wouldn’t be underfoot, but she shoved us out the back door and told us not to come back until dinner (and Mom rarely cooked). It was the greatest thing my neglectful mother did for us kids. I had a glorious childhood.

  3. Sounds like you have subscribed to my husband’s parenting newsletter. HA HA! I just read this to him and he thought it was awesome. LOVE IT! 🙂

  4. Awesome. There’s a saying in some culture… (probably not north in Canada, where I live) that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad (for the weather) clothes

  5. Tie yourself to the deck!!! My favorite part 😉

Lord of the Flies Parenting! The only way to make sure your children can survive in the jungle… or at least not get beaten to a pulp on the middle school bus…
